A few months after they met, Katie woke up to an email from
Ed with a receipt for a plane ticket to Hawaii, where she was doing her first
triathlon. He had bought a ticket to go with her (which was good because she
had no idea what she was doing). This was his way of saying he wasn’t going to
see anyone else. That ended up being the first of many trips they would take
together!How We Met
In Oct of 2010, Ed moved to San Francisco for a job after
grad school. He quickly realized that while he had a few friends in the bay
area but realized it wasn’t the easiest city to meet new people in. He is an
avid cyclist, and specifically wanted someone to go on bike rides with.
Unbeknownst to him, on the other side of town, Katie had just signed up for her
first triathlon. Being the digitally-savy Gen Xer that he is, he decided to
search Match.com for people with “triathlon” in their profile and he came
across Katie’s profile thinking she actually had a bike (which she didn’t). They connected and had their first date at a
little wine bar called Hotel Biron. They hit it off and had their second date
the next night and many more bottles of wine after that. Ed kept telling Katie
repeatedly how he did not want to be in a relationship because he just moved to SF. She kept saying that was fine, and to be fair, he said as much in his
profile. But she started to realize that almost every day around 5:00 he would
ask what she was doing that night and they would usually go do a work out or go
out to dinner, or both. After it happened 7 days in a row, she decided she
wasn’t really worried about him seeing other people.
